Good to know

Why Masonry Condition Matters for Waterproofing

A waterproofing membrane can only perform as well as the surface it's applied to — crumbling parging, cracked block, or deteriorating mortar joints give water a path around a new membrane instead of through it. That's why masonry condition is assessed as part of any waterproofing job, not treated as a separate concern: repairing the wall first means the waterproofing system actually has something sound to bond to and protect. Skipping that step is one of the most common reasons a waterproofing job underperforms.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to what homeowners ask us most about masonry.

Is masonry repair the same as waterproofing?
No. Masonry repair restores the wall itself — fixing parging, brick, or mortar — while waterproofing adds a membrane and drainage system on top of a sound wall. If the wall is deteriorated, we recommend masonry repair first, since waterproofing over damaged masonry won't hold up.
How do I know if my foundation parging needs repair?
Crumbling, cracking, or missing parging are the most visible signs, along with white staining (efflorescence), visible gaps in mortar joints, or brick that feels soft or flakes when touched.
Can masonry repair be done without excavation?
Yes, in most cases. Repairs above ground level are usually accessible without digging. Below-grade repairs typically require excavation to expose the wall, which is often done in tandem with exterior waterproofing when both are needed.
